Even though parrots are known to consume nuts in the wild, pistachios are not a part of their diet. Pistachios are an arid crop that grows in semi-arid climates. So they are not found in a parrot’s habitat. 

That being said, pistachios are safe for parrots. Parrots can eat pistachios as a healthy snack. They are a good source of protein, healthy fats, and dietary fiber. Pistachios are also loaded with a variety of nutrients. 

Keep in mind that nuts and seeds should only constitute a small percentage of a balanced diet for parrots. So offer pistachios to your parrots just as an evening snack or as a treat.

Can Parrots Eat Salted Pistachios?

No, you should not give your parrot salted pistachios. If your parrot eats one or two salted pistachios, it will not cause any harm. But you should not let your parrot eat too many salted pistachios.

Consuming too much sodium can be harmful to parrots and lead to a condition called salt toxicosis. Salted pistachios contain large amounts of sodium that are not safe for your parrot’s health. 

Can Parrots Eat Roasted Pistachios?

Roasted pistachios are okay for parrots as long as they are dry-roasted. Do not give your parrot pistachios that have been roasted in oil or contain added salt and seasonings. 

Can Parrots Eat Pistachio Butter?

Licking a tiny scoop of pistachio butter isn’t a bad thing for your parrot. However, it is definitely not something you should feed your parrot. 

Pistachio butter contains salt,  sugar, preservatives, and other additives that could harm your parrot. It is not a healthy food for parrots and in large amounts can even pose health risks.

How Many Pistachios Can Parrots Eat?

Just like other seeds and nuts, pistachios should constitute a small part of your parrot’s diet. Feeding too many over an extended period of time can lead to problems like weight gain in parrots. 

When serving any kind of seed or nut to your parrot stick with a few only. They’re best served as snacks. You can offer 2-3 pistachios to a small parrot while larger parrots can have up to 5 or 6 at a time. 

How Often Can Parrots Have Pistachios?

Pistachios are a good snack for parrots. They can be healthy for them in limited quantities and should make up a small part of their diet. 

If you give your parrots pistachios too often, it can lead to unhealthy weight gain as nuts are quite high in fats and carbohydrates. 

It would be best if you gave pistachios to your parrots during training sessions and exercise. That way they will get the needed energy to train and also burn off the extra calories. 

How Should I Serve Pistachios To Your Parrots?

You can serve pistachios raw to your parrot. Parrots can easily chop pistachios into pieces by holding them with their foot and using their beaks. If you want you can also chop and sprinkle some pistachio to your parrot’s vegetable mix to add some fat. 


Raw pistachios are healthy for parrots providing them a balance of nutrients. They have important macronutrients such as fats and protein as well as fiber to promote healthy digestion. In addition to that, pistachios contain vital micronutrients like Vitamin C Vitamin B6, Calcium, magnesium, and iron. All of this makes pistachios a nutrition-packed snack for parrots. But remember, it should be served as snacks only. Pistachios does not have to make a large portion of your parrot’s diet.
